How do I move my WordPress Install from a subdirectory to the root/web-root of my domain?

Sometimes when using an auto-installer or an inexperienced contractor, you will end up with a WordPress install at https://domain.com/wp (or similar) instead of domain.com. To fix this you need to move your site from a subdirectory to the web-root or root of your domain.

To move WordPress files from a subdirectory to the root (web-root), you need to follow these steps:

  1. Backup your WordPress site files and database.
  2. Log in to your WordPress dashboard and go to Settings > General.
  3. Change the WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL) or Website URL fields from the subdirectory URL to the root URL. For example, if your site is currently at https://domain.com/wp, change it to https://domain.com.
  4. Save the changes and log out of your WordPress dashboard.
  5. Using an FTP client or a file manager, move all of the WordPress files from the subdirectory to the root directory. Make sure you don’t overwrite any existing files in the root directory.
  6. Log in to your WordPress dashboard again and check if everything is working properly.
